We invite you to share your time, talents, and experience to help shape the future of our Sisterhood. Volunteer Roles

Ways to Give Back

There are many national and local volunteer opportunities available for you to share your time, talent, and experience with our Sisterhood. National volunteers serve on one of our three boards – National Council, National Housing Corporation, and the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation. Other volunteer roles aside from the boards include Special Officers, National Council Designees, Chapter Advisors, Housing volunteers, National Directors and Territory Directors. All positions are crucial to the success of Alpha Xi Delta, and the Fraternity is always looking for dedicated volunteers.

Volunteer Roles

Chapter Advisors and Advisory Boards

These volunteers provide on-the-ground guidance, assistance and positive direction to their assigned chapter(s). Chapter Advisors and advisory boards build positive relationships and deliver consistent communication to serve the chapter.

Chapter Advisors are appointed and trained by their National Council Designee. They work closely together with the chapter to set goals and action steps. The Chapter Advisor also appoints an advisory board. A full advisory board can include, but is not limited to (depending on the needs of the chapter): Chapter Life Advisor, Membership Advisor, New Member Orientation Advisor, Member Development Advisor, Philanthropy Advisor, Finance and Operations Advisor, and Communications Advisor. These advisors closely work with their assigned collegiate officer and/or team to provide guidance on their goals. The time commitment can vary based on the time of year and advisory board position.

Time Commitment: 5-7 hours per week.

Area Facilitators and Chapter Development Specialists

These roles serve as the liaison between their assigned chapter(s), advisory board(s), and the National Fraternity. They provide consistent leadership, mentorship, and support to the chapter(s) and advisor(s) they serve. During their appointment, they provide strategic planning, problem solving and adaptability in decision making. Part of their role is to interpret, and when necessary, grant exceptions to policy. They appoint, train and lead Chapter Advisors. Time

Commitment: 5-10 hours/week.

Directors and Specialists

Trained and experienced in their specific areas of expertise, these volunteers work with chapters/associations as assigned.

Time commitment: 1-5 hours per month.

National Directors Network

This is a network of national volunteers with expertise in the following areas: Academics, C.A.R.E., Extension, Finance, Lifetime Engagement, Member Development, Philanthropy, Ritual, Recruitment. The National Directors Network helps Territory Directors and Specialists find answers to questions for the chapters or associations.

Time Commitment: 5-10 hours/month.

Housing Corporation Boards

Housing volunteers may serve a local housing corporation board as a general board member or an officer. They are often voted into their role and serve a variety of functions. Considering the scope of the property, campus norms, and chapter needs, housing volunteers help to manage member contracting, financial reporting, vendor relations, employee recruiting/ evaluation, capital project planning, communication to chapter alumnae, and more. These volunteers serve 1-3 year terms and can be remote or located near the chapter they support. Fraternity Headquarters staff can connect you with a local corporation if you have interest in this role.

Time Commitment: 1-3 hours/week (in “non-peak” periods).

Short-Term/As-Needed Projects

Typical short-term projects include: Writing content for Fraternity publications; opportunities to provide educational training and facilitation at different Fraternity events; event planning and event production.

“I choose to give back to our organization because I’ve been given so much through Alpha Xi Delta. I have met many of my best friends, both in college and as an alumna. I have gained new leadership skills. I have learned about myself and grown my confidence, and I have experienced the true meaning of philanthropy and what it feels like to give back to my community.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the qualifications to be a volunteer?

Any Alpha Xi Delta, regardless if you held a collegiate officer position or not, who is in good standing is encouraged to apply for a volunteer role! We need Sisters who have strong organization and management skills, good oral and written communication skills, foster Alpha Xi Delta’s vision and mission, have creative ideas, and want to inspire others.

What is the time commitment?

The time commitment depends on the needs of the role and what your schedule allows. We have opportunities that can meet you where you are with your schedule and availability.

Do I have to be a certain age?

No, any alumna in good standing with Alpha Xi Delta can volunteer immediately following graduation. However, we prefer Sisters to wait two years after graduation before volunteering with their own chapter unless special permission is granted.

Will I be expected to travel?

Some local volunteers live near the chapter they serve, but many volunteers serve remotely. Travel depends on the role you hold and what’s needed for that position. Travel expectations will be communicated, if there are any.

Can I volunteer remotely?

Yes! Alpha Xi Delta’s professional staff is fully remote, so we are very comfortable in performing the work of the Fraternity in a virtual setting. We also have volunteer roles that are not tied to being in a specific place, so remote work is essential. Being a remote volunteer is great for someone who wants to share her time and expertise, but may not live near a local volunteer opportunity.

What are the benefits of volunteering?
  • Opportunity to give time, talent and treasure back to the Alpha Xi Delta membership.
  • Sense of accomplishment in helping shape lives by inspiring women to realize their potential.
  • Recognition and appreciation from the National Fraternity for dedication and support.
  • Opportunity to network with Alpha Xi Delta Sisters.
  • Satisfaction of helping perpetuate the ideals of Alpha Xi Delta.
Will I receive the training and support I need?

Yes! Volunteer training is provided by the Fraternity through conference calls, online learning modules, webinars, resources and more. There are specific resources tailored to certain volunteer roles, and our staff is always available to help answer questions and provide guidance.

What are the expectations of volunteers?

For the technology basics, we expect volunteers to have access to email with attachment capabilities and to respond to messages within 48 hours. Volunteers need to have experience and willingness to work in virtual settings (ie. Web-based platforms, teleconference, webinars, etc.). In some roles, volunteers submit reports to designated staff liaisons and/or National Council. We expect volunteers to become educated about and advocate for Alpha Xi Delta Foundation, participate in giving campaigns if possible, and pay alumnae dues annually.

How can I find out about open volunteer positions?

Please fill out a volunteer interest form to let us know a little bit about you, how much time you have to commit, if you’re interested in a particular position, and the talents you can bring to a volunteer role. We’ll contact you, and let you know what available roles might be a good fit for you.
