Why is Alpha Xi Delta ending its partnership with Autism Speaks, and how was this decision made?

Over the last few months, Alpha Xi Delta has been engaging in important conversations surrounding our partnership with Autism Speaks. A Task Force was appointed to consider both solicited and unsolicited feedback and commentary from our membership, and to make a recommendation to National Council on the best path forward for Alpha Xi Delta’s national philanthropic partnership.

We received feedback via Listening Sessions, chapter conversations, individual communications and survey results from nearly 4,000 Alpha Xi Deltas, more than 2,500 undergraduate members and more than 1,300 alumnae members.

With the best interest of the membership as the guiding principle, the Task Force recommended the National Fraternity discontinue our national philanthropic partnership with Autism Speaks. National Council approved this recommendation. We are now in the process of forming a committee that will conduct a comprehensive assessment of potential new philanthropic partners, emphasizing engagement, transparency and collaboration at all levels. As we did during our evaluation of the Autism Speaks partnership, Alpha Xi Delta will seek to listen, engage and understand.

For the fall 2021 and the spring 2022 semesters, Alpha Xi Delta chapters and alumnae associations will be required to support the Kindly Hearts Campaign while the committee works to secure a permanent philanthropic partnership. 

What is the Kindly Hearts Campaign?

The Kindly Hearts Campaign (KHC) is a year of service and fundraising to support our communities in some of the areas most directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Campaign will run during the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters. As much of the US and the world continues to cope with, and seek to recover from, the COVID-19 pandemic, Alpha Xi Delta is galvanizing our membership around this shared experience and deploying our time, talents and treasures to serve our local communities that are in need.

To support the Kindly Hearts Campaign, Alpha Xi Delta chapters and alumnae associations create project plans within one or more of the following areas of focus: supporting students, food insecurity, and basic needs shortages. To learn more about KHC, click here.

Why was the Kindly Hearts Campaign chosen?

The plan was chosen to guide philanthropic efforts for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters. While the circumstances that brought us to a change in our focus occurred independently from the pandemic, the opportunity this timing presented to galvanize our membership around this shared experience and to deploy our time, talents and treasures to serve our local communities was top of mind. 

When does this new focus on philanthropy begin?

The Kindly Hearts Campaign begins immediately. Chapters will be expected to direct philanthropy fundraising and service efforts toward the Kindly Hearts Campaign beginning with the fall 2021 semester. 

Will this be our permanent philanthropy?

No. The Kindly Hearts Campaign will be our focus for the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters. We expect to share a permanent philanthropic focus before the fall 2022 semester.  

What do I do with merchandise that features our co-branded logo that I no longer need?

Please do not donate any merchandise that features our Greek letters, name, or co-branded logo. Clothing may be sent to Fraternity Headquarters, and we will recycle it. 

Any items that can recycled, please do so. For items that cannot be recycled, please properly dispose of them. 

What do we do if my chapter has already ordered t-shirts for fall recruitment that promote Autism Speaks?

Please email us at fhq@alphaxidelta.org with your order number, type of item ordered, amount of items ordered, cost and when you need the item in hand. We will work with you on a solution.  

What resources will be available to help with fundraising efforts?

Alpha Xi Delta staff and volunteers are working diligently to provide resources for chapter officers soon. All resources will be posted in Exclusively Xi’s Resource Center and communication will be sent via email.  

How do we inform our campus/community that we are no longer partners with Autism Speaks?

Alpha Xi Delta will be sending an update to all Fraternity and Sorority Life staff on campuses where we have chapters. Chapter Presidents are encouraged to follow up with their campus professionals to ensure they received the message. You can view the statement here.

Can we still support Autism Speaks?

Chapter members may continue to support Autism Speaks individually, but all chapters’ philanthropic focus will now be directed toward the Kindly Hearts Campaign.  

Where can we order merchandise to promote the Kindly Hearts Campaign?

Xi Boutique has the official Kindly Hearts Campaign logo and is ready to fulfill orders. Retail items will be available for sale soon on Xi Boutique's website. If you're interested in placing a custom group order, please email custom@xiboutique.com.

As a reminder, all merchandise purchased that bears Alpha Xi Delta's marks must be purchased via an official Greek licensed vendor. Learn more about licensed vendors here

We already planned to support another organization and/or philanthropy this year. Do we have to switch to the Kindly Hearts Campaign?

Yes, chapters are required to participate in the Kindly Hearts Campaign. If you had previous philanthropy plans, please email fhq@alphaxidelta.org

Where can I get more information on how to plan philanthropy events?

The Philanthropy team will be assisting chapters and associations to find the best path forward for them to support the Kindly Hearts Campaign. More information and resources will be available soon, and updates will be sent via email.
