We know for some of you this may be you first Alpha Xi Delta Convention. If it is, you are probably dying to know what to expect! To help you prepare for this year's Convention, we decided to share some of our favorite etiquette tips with you! Here are some etiquette tips to help you prepare for Convention.

Meeting Etiquette
While Convention is a time for Alpha Xi Deltas to celebrate our Sisterhood, it is also a time for Sisters to gather and conduct the formal business of the Fraternity. With that being said, we have a variety of meetings and presentations planned for this year's Convention, including educational sessions, chapter meetings and award presentations, just to name a few. Here are some general tips for you to follow while attending a meeting or presentation.

1. Make sure you dress appropriately for all of the Convention meetings. If you have questions about what is considered "appropriate" dress, check out our previous blog post on what to wear to this year's National Convention.

2. Arrive on time for the event. On the same note, do not leave until the presentation is complete. Leaving in the middle of a speech or recognition will take attention off of the presenter and direct it towards you. To avoid the urge to leave, excuse yourself and use the restroom before the event begins.

3. Make sure you turn off your cell phones, iPods, tablets and any other electronic devices that may make noises prior to the start of the meeting. In some cases, the presenter may ask you to keep your cell phone on so you can interact with each other via social media during the presentation. If this is the case, it is ok to leave your electronic devices on, but please make sure they are on silent. This will ensure that the session runs smoothly without any interruptions.

Dinner and Banquet Etiquette
You may have noticed that we have many different banquets and meals planned for Convention in San Francisco. If this is going to be your first time at a fancy dinner, we have some tips to help you feel more comfortable and allow you to enjoy your time at Convention!

1. If you show up with Sisters that you know, it is ok to sit with them at a table. However, if there is not room for all of you to sit together, please do not make a scene. If something like this happens, split the group up so some of you sit at one table, while the rest of you sit at another one near by. We recommend not always sitting with your friends and the same Sisters. Mix it up at different events and take the opportunity to meet new Sisters! We hear that meeting new collegiate Sisters and Alpha Xi Delta alumnae is the best part for many Sisters attending Convention.

2. Too many utensils at the dinner table? Here is an easy tip: Start on the outside and work your way in!

3. When you are done eating, place your utensils on your plate and leave the plate in front of you. This simple action will let the waiters and waitresses know you are finished and they will come clear your plate. Please refrain from pushing your plate away and stacking plates on the table. Remember you're at Alpha Xi Delta's Convention, so enjoy it and let the wait staff take care of you.

Hotel Etiquette
If you are staying on-site at the Hilton Union Square in San Francisco, it is important to follow hotel rules and procedures as well as be respectful to other hotel guests. Keep in mind that we want you to have fun with your Sisters, but this is not a party. With that being said, there are going to be a lot of Alpha Xi Delta Sisters at this year's Convention, so let's take this opportunity to show San Francisco how great Alpha Xi Delta truly is!

1. When you are not attending Convention-related events, it's ok to wear your normal, everyday clothes or even something a little bit more comfortable, but make sure your attire is still appropriate.

2. Be patient and courteous when dealing with the hotel staff. We all know that things do not always go as planned and people do make mistakes. If a conflict arises during your stay at Convention, no matter how frustrated you may be, make sure you work it out in a calm voice and respectful manner. On the other hand, when things are going great, it is nice to tip the hotel staff for their exceptional services

3. Remember, always be on your best behavior because others will form opinions about Alpha Xi Delta based on your actions and appearance. If a hotel guest complains about you or your behavior, it will reflect poorly on the Fraternity.

It's time for another Throwback Thursday! Since school's our and the weather's warm, we just had to post this photo from the spring 1987 issue of The Quill. Doesn't it just scream summer?

This photo was featured in Alpha Xi Delta's magazine with a story about recruitment. The big "Xi Beach" sunglasses and Alpha Xi Delta surfboard were actually used a props during a chapter's formal recruitment in the 1980s.

How to Spend Your Free Time in San Francisco

San Francisco is right around the corner, and for those of you looking for something to do in your free time, we have some suggestions. Whether you want to go out and site see, or relax with your Sisters, here is a list of things to see and do during your stay.

Spas
There are many spas within walking distance of our hotel. One of the spas we recommend is Burke Williams. Only a quick five-minute walk from our hotel, Burke Williams is known for their massages and nail treatments. Here you can relax, breathe deeply and experience the benefits of custom massage therapy or get a quick mani pedi.

Another spa we recommend is The Spa, located less then a mile from the Hilton. The Spa is known for their “personalized spa packages” which allows you to customize your spa experience. Pick treatments from a long list to make the perfect spa day for you and your friends.

Shopping
Who doesn’t love to shop? There is plenty of it to do in San Francisco! Located only five minutes from the hotel is the Westfield San Francisco Centre. This shopping plaza has all your favorite brands such as Tiffany’s and Co, Tory Burch and Nordstrom’s. These are only a few of the fabulous stores you can choose from!

Another place where you can get your shopping fix is Crocker Galleria. Located just ten minutes from the hotel (walking distance), the Crocker Galleria is the perfect place for accessory hunting! With multiple shoe, jewelry and watch shops, Crocker Galleria is a great stop for any accessory queens.

At San Francisco’s Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, the Cannery and the surrounding area called Fisherman’s Wharf, there are numerous shops, restaurants, hotels and museums. Stop by to shop or just to people watch!

Outdoor Activities
The Golden Gate Park offers a ton of activities for you to try! There is a museum, which is free to visitors and highlights current artists in the area. Take a ride on the Golden Gate Park Carousel or have tea at the Japanese Tea Garden. Don’t forget about the conservatory, which is known to host the prettiest plants during the summer!

Permission to Pick More Than One

Pick one. Pick one? I can’t pick just one! For instance, when I'm shopping for shoes my policy is if it’s comfortable, I’ll buy a pair in every color available.

What about ice cream? Who can just choose one flavor when you are going out for ice cream? Ice cream. ONE flavor?!?! Why?

If you ever go to dinner with me, you may notice that I always order last because it's hard for me to hone in on just ONE thing. That’s why I love the Shining Stars program by the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation. During my time as a National Vice President, it was my honor to share “Shining Stars” with our dear volunteers who do far more than we could ever pay for. The same goes for our Fraternity staff; I know they work more hours than we pay them for.

Last summer during Volunteer Training, somewhere between reuniting with dear Sisters – both volunteers and staff – and drafting my list of Shining Stars, I decided to “do stars” for some Sisters who were not in attendance at Volunteer Training. This led me on a quest to find some Sisters I had lost touch with. One Sister in particular came to mind. She had been the Educational Leadership Consultant (ELC) that helped with the colonization of my chapter at North Carolina State University. After some Facebook sleuthing with other Sisters I found her! She got her Shining Star and then we connected by phone. It seemed like time stood still, and we picked up almost right where we’d left off years ago.

This sounds like Sisterhood to me! Lisa Murphy Stamos, you STILL inspire me!

Alpha Xi Delta will celebrate the anniversary of our 50^th National Convention this summer in San Francisco, California. While you may not be able to join us in person, I challenge you to join us in spirit and let a Sister know she’s made a difference in your life and the lives of other Sisters. And why pick just one? The sky’s the limit.

The Shining Stars program provides you with the opportunity to give to something very important to all of us, the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation, while honoring those special Sisters and friends in our lives. 2013 Convention: Songs to Brush Up On

If you've been to one of Alpha Xi Delta's National Conventions in the past, you know that singing is a big part of the event. It may have been a while since some of our Sisters held hands and sang The Sisterhood of Women or gathered around a table and recited Grace. In preparation for this year's Convention, we created lyric videos to help Sisters brush up on these two Alpha Xi Delta songs.

Alpha Xi Delta's Grace is sang before every formal meal at National Convention. You will hear it at the Welcome Banquet and Rose Banquet, just to name a few. Click on the video below to listen to the song and read the lyrics on your screen.

2013 Convention: Dressing the Part

We're almost one month away from this year's National Convention, and some of you might be thinking, "I need to go shopping to find something to wear!" For those of you who are thinking ahead and already picking out your outfits for the week, we have some style tips for you.

Our first tip is to dress in Quill attire. With the exception of the events listed below, you will need to wear outfits that fit this category at National Convention. In its simplest terms, Quill attire is professional attire and includes items such as dress pants, a skirt and nice shirt or a dress. Don't forget that Quill attire also means a nice pair of dress shoes! No need to panic - the term "dress shoes" does not necessarily mean "high heels." If you're not comfortable standing in heels all day; Make sure you throw a cute pair of flats into your suitcase!

Here are some style tips for a few events that do not require Quill attire:

The Workout
Dress for this event is casual. Try wearing a nice pair of jeans and your favorite Alpha Xi Delta top!

Welcome Banquet and Awards Celebration
For these two events we recommend wearing a nice dress or pant suit. If you are unsure what "nice" means, try sticking with Quill attire. When in doubt, go with that.

Sisterhood Event
Save those shorts and tank tips for the beach, ladies! While this event doesn't require a cocktail dresses, it is a little bit more casual. Make sure you pack your favorite jeans and a cute top so you are prepared for this gathering.

Initiation Ceremony
You will need to bring something white or cream colored to Convention for the Initiation Ceremony. A white or cream-colored dress or white/cream-colored pants and top, will be perfect for this event! Don't forget to bring your white shoes! We know these are hard to find, but try your best to find something appropriate.

Philanthropy Breakfast
Since it is our "philanthropy breakfast," plan to wear something blue to show you support for Autism Speaks!

Rose Banquet
This is the night where you can really get your glamour on! We recommend bringing a cocktail dress for the Rose Banquet. Feel free to wear your strappy heels and fancy jewlery to this event. We promise, you can't look over dressed for this occasion!

Excursions and Free Time
Don't forget to pack some comfortable clothes for some free time and sightseeing. Plus, there is a pool at the hotel, so be sure to bring a bathing suit, sunscreen and your favorite pair of sunglasses!

Here's another tip: Shorts, halter tops and similar casual clothing is not appropriate for Convention-related events. When picking out skirts and dresses for the event, make sure what you choose is not too short! Remember ladies, Alpha Xis should always be classXi!

Auburn

Zeta Xi Chapter at Auburn University had fun supporting and campaigning for Kathryn Crowley, the chapter’s candidate for Homecoming. Sisters kicked off the week with a flash mob on the concourse wearing Kathryn’s colors, bright pink and green, and helped promote Kathryn’s platform, bringing awareness to sustainability on campus. Kathryn has always been very involved on campus with Panhellenic and Student government and is majoring in Building Science. – Sami Griffith, ssg0005@auburn.edu

Bowling Green

During the holiday season, Alpha Xi Deltas at Bowling Green State University visited three local nursing homes to pass out holiday cards and sing carols. East Carolina

This year the Gamma Phi Chapter received five awards (Chapter of the Year, Outstanding Philanthropy Program of the Year, Highest GPA Award and Faculty Advisor of the Year Award) at Eastern Carolina University’s Annual Greek Awards. In addition, Gamma Phi’s Chapter Advisor, Anna Weaver, East Carolina ’76, was inducted into the Greek Hall of Fame for 2012. Elon

Cailtin Jones, a senior at Elon University and a Sister of the Theta Nu Chapter, recently won first place at the International Collegiate Sales Competition hosted at Florida State University. More than 30 schools were represented at the competition with 20 competitors. Each round consisted of a 20-minute role-play to “buyers” and Sype calls. Caitlin took first place in each of the four rounds selling the Tom James Clothing Company and was named the overall champion, while Elon University placed third as a team.“It was hands-down the most intense and memorable experience I have had at Elon to date.” Caitlin said. “I could not have accomplished this and come so far it I did not have the support of my Sisters, family and sales team.” – Kelly Autenrieth, kautenrieth@elon.edu

Georgia Tech

Sisters from the Gamma Eta Chapter were named Homecoming champions this past fall at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Sisters celebrated at the last Georgia Tech home football game of the season when the final results were announced at halftime. – Samantha Giannelli, Samantha.giannelli@gmail.com

Idaho State

This year Alpha Xi Deltas at Idaho State University partnered with Kappa Sigma to run for homecoming king and queen. Members of both organizations came together to show their support for their candidates. Together they made a video on campus showing their love for Idaho State University and performed the song “Ku Fu Fighting” in front of a live audience. At the end of the week, Sister Lindsey Schroeder was crowned homecoming queen at Idaho State University. – Ashley Grae Outsen, outsashl@isu.edu

Indiana U of Pennsylvania

Sisters at Indiana University of Pennsylvania recently held a holiday preview for spring recruitment. Potential new members were invited to the new chapter suite to meet the Sisters and learn more about spring recruitment. Northern Iowa

Ohio Northern

This fall the Gamma Tau Chapter welcomed an amaXIng new member class and fellow Sister, Dayna Heath, who transferred from Iowa Wesleyan College. Sisters also received a personally designed and handcrafted sign, which is now on display outside of their chapter house. – Allie Dolan, a-dolan@uno.ed

Portland Alumnae Association

The Portland Alumnae Association held a holiday cookie exchange in December. Sisters shared Alpha Xi Delta memories, enjoyed games and refreshments and left with a collection of holiday sweets. The association hopes to make this a holiday tradition! – Karen Rosvall, axidpdx@yahoo.com

San Jose State

Iota Omicron Chapter at San Jose State University recently welcomed Sisters from Sonoma State University and California State University Stanislaus to the San Jose chapter house for Area Wide Training (AWT). At AWT Sisters bonded, shared ideas and learned important tips to help their chapters thrive. Gamma Omega Chapter had a very busy fall semester. The chapter had six girls on the homecoming court, had the highest Greek GPA on campus and the largest Greek new member class after formal recruitment. In addition, Sisters helped a local fraternity raise more than $200 for the Arkansas Children's Hospital by collecting donations from friends and Sisters. The Sacramento Alumnae Association celebrated the end of 2012 with a holiday party and ornament exchange, Nearly 20 Sisters gathered to chat, share holiday treats and participate in a white elephant ornament exchange. The Chesapeake Alumnae Association had a busy fall schedule! Amy Beaulieu, MHA, Director of Tobacco Control Policy at American Lung Association in Nevada, Culver-Stockton ‘91, received the Nevada Public Health Association’s Public Health Advocate of the Year award. The program stated, “Amy has worked tirelessly advocating for tougher smoke-free laws throughout Nevada. She has testified numerous times on the state and local levels on why secondhand smoke is a public health concern and keeps the prevention community informed of all newsworthy information regarding tobacco use in the state. Over the past year, she has made significant strides in making Mesquite and Boulder City two of the first towns to take a smoke-free stance. Although both locations still have many obstacles to overcome, this has not stopped her determination to making Nevada a better place to breathe! Alpha Xi Deltas from the University of Nebraska at Omaha decided to adopt two families this holiday season. Sisters worked together to gather items such as winter clothes and coloring books for the families in need. Sisters at Lycoming College participated in the Martin Luther King Day of Service sponsored by AmeriCorps. At the event Sisters made care packages for children who live in the Williamsport community. Delta Rho Chapter recently held its Cirque Xi Soleil, a vintage carnival with games, food and other carnival activities. Denver Alumnae Association

The Denver Alumnae Association invited Jessica Ross and Kristin Ellefson to a recent association meeting to talk about their involvement with Autism Speaks. Jessica, who has first-hand knowledge of autism through her five-year-old son, explained what it was like to have a child with autism. She also serves as the 2013 chairman for the Walk Now for Autism Speaks fundraising campaign which will take place on May 11. Kristen is Alpha Xi Delta’s Philanthropy and Community Outreach Manager, and she educated the group on her role as liaison for Alpha Xi Delta and Autism Speaks. Alpha Xi Deltas at Indiana University held their first ever Football FrenXi event. The chapter hosted more than 12 teams from numerous Greek organizations on campus for a fun day of friendly competition. Sisters participated in the event by selling t-shirts, coaching teams, cheering for the participants and hosting a barbeque. Alpha Xi Delta Sisters at Marquette University held a successful Puzzlepalooza event this year! This year, Theta Tau Chapter decided to bring back their Mr. Marian contest, a male talent competition, to raise money for Autism Speaks. Theta Chi Chapter at the University of Toledo has partnered with the Autism Society of Northwest Ohio (ASNO) for the semester. Sisters will help ASNO prepare for their upcoming extended school year program, attend (ASNO) workshops and help plan a community event for those children and families touched by autism. Pennsylvania
Iota Mu Chapter won second place in the junior marching division at the 67^th annual Mummer’s Parade is South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and donated the $80 prize to Autism Speaks. The chapter also went trick-or-treating for Autism Speaks and raised an additional $75 for our national philanthropic partner. Currently, the Iota Mu Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta is ranked number one in community service at Lycoming College with a total of 320 hours! – Alyssa Riggle, rigalys@lycoming.edu

Protecting Your Health: Learning about the BRCA Gene Mutation

May 12 - 19, 2013 is National Women's Health Week. According to womenshealth.gov, the week was designed to encourage and empower women to:

Visit a health care professional to receive regular checkups and preventive screenings
Get active
Eat healthy
Pay attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress
Avoid unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, not wearing a seatbelt or bicycle helmet and texting while driving

In an attempt to raise awareness of National Women's Health Week and to educate Sisters and women on the importance of women's health, Betsy Coy, Bowling Green '94, shares her story of how she was impacted by the BRCA1 gene mutation that runs in her family. BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 gene mutations produce hereditary breast-ovarian cancer syndrome, and women who carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are more likely to develop breast and/or ovarian cancer in their lifetimes.

There is a lot of cancer in my family. A lot. I have spent most of my life thinking that I would die of cancer. Three and a half years ago, I received genetic counseling and genetic testing, which confirmed what I had always suspected. I am at a higher risk of having cancer than the general population. Not just a little higher, either. The BRCA1 gene mutation that runs in my family brought my lifetime risk of developing breast cancer up to 87% and my lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer to 50%. At the time, I was 35 years old, married, with two kids - ages six and five. These percentages were earth shattering to me. I stopped asking myself If I would get cancer and started asking when.

I was given some materials to help sort through my options. I could do increased screening for both breast and ovarian cancer, including ultrasounds, mammograms and Magnetic Resonance Imagines (MRIs). My alternative choice was to have prophylactic surgeries. After many doctors’ appointments and conversations, I chose to have a prophylactic double mastectomy and reconstruction. My friends and family had mixed reactions. “Wasn’t I worried about losing my breasts?” “Why would I make such a radical decision?” The truth was, the only thing I was worried about was staying alive for my family. I have since also had a prophylactic oophorectomy to remove my ovaries and fallopian tubes. My risk has been lowered to 1-2% for both breast and ovarian cancer. I breathe a little easier every day and consider myself so fortunate to have had access to the medical knowledge and technology that others in my family didn't have. I'm certain that having this knowledge, and making the choice to have these surgeries, has saved my life - literally. I plan on being around to celebrate many more anniversaries with my husband and birthdays with my children.

Having the genetic testing and knowing that I have this BRCA gene mutation was and is not always easy. Luckily, on my journey I found an amazing organization called Bright Pink. Bright Pink is the only national non-profit organization focusing on the risk reduction and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women, while providing support for high-risk individuals. It is an amazing organization that offered me support through my surgeries and still provides me with a group of women who understand my situation. I started a chapter of Bright Pink in Cleveland, Ohio, to help provide local educational and support programs. Bright Pink isn't only for women at high risk. It is an organization that strives to educate all young women to be proactive, talk with their families and their doctors and most of all - take control of their breast and ovarian health. I’m hoping that when you read this, you will take a minute and take control of YOUR breast and ovarian health. Talk with your parents about your family history. Text PINK to 59227 to receive monthly reminders about your breast self-exam. Know the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Have real conversations with your doctors.

When I reflect upon the things in my life that have shaped me into the person I am today, being an Alpha Xi Delta rises to the top. The self-assuredness I built through those years of Sisterhood was the foundation for my strength through this process and not surprisingly, my Sisters were some of my strongest supporters. My leadership experience as president of the Beta Mu Chapter gave me the confidence to know I could take on the role of Chapter Ambassador for Bright Pink.

Throw Back Thursday - Delta Gamma Chapter at UNK

This month we decided to dedicate our throwback Thursday post to our Delta Gamma Chapter at the University of Nebraska Kearney (UNK)! We will be recolonizing our chapter at UNK this fall!

On April 7, 1962, the local Zeta Chi Alpha sorority was installed as the Delta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta, making the chapter the 98th acitive link in Alpha XI Delta's Sisterhood. The picture below is from the chapter's installation at Nebraska State College in Kearney, now known as the University of Nebraska Kearney.

And here's a photo of the Delta Gamma Chapter new members that was published in the October 1962 issue of the Fraternity's magazine, The Alpha Xi Delta. The caption read, "Four pledges of Delta Gamma won first place in a field of eighteen acts in the annual "K" Variety Show at Nebraska State College in Kearney. With their version of "The Ladies of the Mopping Line" the trophy winners were (L to R) Penny Wright, Barbara Johnson, Barbara McLain, and Linda Roblee."

And here's a newsletter that was published by the chapter in 1966. In one paragraph the chapter writes, "The Chapter would like to give special thanks to Mrs. Carol Cope for all of her assistance this year. She not only serves as advisor to the treasurer, but guided the publicity committee for Alpha Xi Delta Sing and is head of the Grace Ferris Memorial presentation. She is also sponsor of Delta Omicron, the music honorary. A special thank you to Mrs. Cope." A Look Back at the 2011 National Convention

It seems like it was just yesterday that Sisters were saying their goodbyes in Atlanta, Georgia, at the 2011 National Convention. Do you remember how much fun we had? We spent the week meeting new Sisters, shopping at Xi Boutique, learning new information about the Fraternity, introducing our Rose Petals to our Sisterhood and honoring those Sisters and chapters for their great accompishments. The week sure was busy, but it was filled with smiling, laughter and a little singing, too!

For those of you who were at the 2011 National Convention, here's a reminder of all the good times we had Atlanta. If you were not able to attend the last Convention, take a look at our video recap and see what you can look forward to this summer if you join us in San Francisco.

Two years has flown by and it's time to start making plans for our 50th National Convention! If you thought the 2011 Convention looked like fun, just wait until this year! What is a Foundation Liaison?

The Foundation was established in 1957 with the leadership of Mary Burt Nash, Alpha Xi Delta's National President 1957-1962. She envisioned the Foundation helping the Fraternity realize "greater achievement in college life, greater usefulness in society and greater significance in the lives of individual members."

Today the Foundation is fulfilling this vision by furthering the Fraternity's core purpose of Sisterhood, leadership, knowledge and service. This work is made possible through gifts made from alumnae, collegians, friends, family, chapters, associations and investment income. In addition, the Foundation Liaisons on the chapter level play a key role in attributing to the Foundation's success.

What is a Foundation Liaison?

Collegiate chapters appoint one of their members to be a Foundation Liaison to help communicate the Foundation's goals to chapter members. This Sister aims to inspire a spirit of giving in all members throughout the collegiate experience, utilizes creativity to educate chapter members on the importance of giving and fosters a value of life-long giving within chapter members while showing Sisters how the Foundation can benefit them.

Morgan Weber, Mount Union '12, is one of the 2012-2013 Foundation Liaisons. She was asked by Gamma Chapter's Executive Committee to take on the role of Foundation Liaison earlier this year. As a newly initiated member of the Fraternity, Morgan was looking for a way to connect with her Sisters and take advantage of the leadership opportunities available to her through her membership in Alpha Xi Delta, and she felt this was the perfect way to get involved. Her organization and communication skills made Morgan the perfect candidate for the position.

As Foundation Liaison, Morgan spent the semester sharing information about scholarships with her Sisters to help them meet deadlines and learn more about how the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation can benefit them and making announcements at chapter meetings to keep her Sisters informed. Her favorite part of the job was being able to collaborate with Sisters who serve in other chapter officer positions. For example, while planning and giving the Gamma Chapter Founders' Day gift, Morgan and the chapter's Financial Vice President found themselves working closely together. Based on her experience, Morgan believes the Foundation Liaison position provided her with the opportunity to develop close working relationships and tighter bonds with her Sisters while educating Sisters on life-long Sisterhood, opportunities to continue connecting after college and giving back to Alpha Xi Delta. She highly recommends this position to any Sister who enjoys working with others.

Morgan has been successful in her role as Foundation Liaison, her first officer position within Alpha Xi Delta, because of her close communication with Fraternity Headquarters and support from her chapter Sisters. She says she is still trying to find more creative ways to share all of the information about scholarships, the Foundation and giving back with her chapter and looks forward to continuing this role in the fall and becoming more involved as a leader in her chapter in the future.

The Foundation thanks Morgan, and all of our Foundation Liaisons, for the time and hard work they have put into supporting the Foundation. The Founders' Day gifts, the Undergraduate Giving Challenge and additional gifts from our collegiate members are an integral part of why the Foundation is able to support the Fraternity and her members in their educational mission.

I Am Alpha Xi Delta Proud

I was so excited to post Alpha Xi Delta’s “celebrate the 1 in 88” logo on my Facebook page a few weeks ago in honor of World Autism Awareness Day and Autism Awareness Month. Then, I read about a study that is currently being conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that suggests the number of children diagnosed with autism is still growing. If this study proves to be true, there will be at least two children in each grade at my community’s elementary school who are affected by autism spectrum disorders.

Alpha Xi Delta’s partnership with Autism Speaks touches me deeply on a personal level, since I have a son on the spectrum as well as a number of family members. I can’t even begin to describe how grateful I was when Alpha Xi Delta proclaimed Autism Speaks as its national philanthropic partner in 2009.

This partnership is timely and important for the Fraternity. Autism is an epidemic that needs to be recognized in our communities to raise awareness and tolerance of the challenges others face in their daily lives. Autism receives media attention, but so little funding. Every bit helps to find the cause of autism, develop better therapies and also offer early intervention opportunities for families. Not only does this partnership educate our communities, but it also educates our members who more than likely to know, or will know, individuals on the spectrum at some point in their lives. So many college and alumnae chapters working hand in hand on philanthropy events creates an advocate in each participant.

Like many parents fighting this war on all fronts, I would love to be able to participate in more fundraising and autism awareness events, but our daily family challenges make this unfeasible. I was finally able to attend an Alpha Xi Delta fundraiser for Autism Speaks in Annapolis, Maryland, last month. It was thrilling to meet Sisters from a number of chapters standing side by side with friends from the local autism community. My feelings included joy of being able to connect with my Sisters as well as the safety, comfort, understanding and networking opportunities that being among other parents affords.

I have always wanted to participate in a Walk Now for Autism Speaks event and assemble a team in honor of my son, William, but the fear of managing his needs in a large, public forum is always a deterrent. After this latest experience with Alpha Xi Delta and Autism Speaks, I vow to try this year, as I now know that I will truly be in a place of safety and understanding.

To have an organization that I love, full of people I love and respect, pick up this torch and wave it for me sustains me. I am and forever will be, Alpha Xi Delta proud.

Five Job-Hunting Tips for Graduating Seniors

It’s graduation season! While you may be prepared to put on your cap and gown and receive your diploma, are you prepared for what happens after graduation? Some of you may already have jobs lined up for the summer after graduation or the following fall, and for those of you who don’t it’s not time to panic just yet. There’s still plenty of time to land your dream job, and here are five of our favorite tips to help you do just that.

1. Network, Network, Network. You’ve probably heard this more than a thousand times during your time as an undergrad, so you know what it means. Networking with your Sisters, peers, business professionals and even your family members can help you find a job after graduation. Talk to everyone you can and let them know that you are looking for a job. Tell them what kind of job you are hoping to find and your goals for the future. This will ensure that you pop into mind when they hear of potential job openings, and if you get to know them well enough, your contacts can vouch for you during the application process.

2. Visit your student services office or career development center. Individuals who work in these departments are there to help you, so why not use these resources to your full advantage? Oftentimes, the career development center will be able to educate you on your major and the types of jobs you may be qualified for after graduation. In addition, they can provide you with internship listings and job postings; look at your resume and give you tips on how to improve it and make yourself more marketable; and help you prepare for upcoming interviews and meetings by conducting “mock interviews” in person, over the phone or via the internet. Listen to their feedback and use it to your benefit.

3. Be mindful of your appearance, both in person and on the web. We all know that it takes seconds for someone to form an opinion about you based on your appearance. When you meet with someone or show up for a job interview, make sure to look your best and act professional. If you are going for an interview, it is a good idea to research the company and learn about their dress code. If you are overdressed you might feel uncomfortable and lack confidence, or if you are underdressed, you give off a bad first impression. Doing a little research beforehand will ensure you are prepared for the event and comfortable with your appearance. In addition to your physical appearance, potential employers will look you up on social media. Yes, this includes Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Before you start applying for jobs, go through these sites and delete any inappropriate pictures, posts, etc. If a future employer stumbles upon a suggestive photo or an inappropriate post they will form opinions about you and it will affect your chances of receiving a job offer, let alone landing that initial interview.

4. Don’t be afraid to do an internship. You may have noticed that a lot of entry-level positions are requesting candidates with 1 – 5 years of experience, and unfortunately, the four years college students spend in the classroom and attending lectures does not qualify as “experience.” Internships open up new windows for young adults in search of employment. You never know when a job opportunity will become available, and an internship can subject you to that information. If a job opens up in the company you are interning with, you already have a foot in the door, and your internship might lead to a job offer. At the very least, internships will give you the experience you need and connections to help you land a full-time job.

5. Be patient. Very rarely do individuals go to one job interview and get hired on the spot. The job hunting process takes time and effort. Don’t be discouraged if you apply to multiple positions and don’t hear back from potential employers. If you find that you’re being too selective on the jobs you are applying for, broaden your search and apply for even more. Eventually, you will find a job. Keep in mind that your first job may not be ideal, but take it seriously, work hard and be professional. Learn from it and use it as a stepping-stone to move on to your next business venture.

In addition to these tips, your membership in Alpha Xi Delta is also a great tool for the job hunt. Join a local alumnae association after graduation, connect with Sisters via Facebook and LinkedIn and don’t be afraid to reach out to Sisters for advice. Remember, membership in Alpha Xi Delta goes beyond graduation, and your Sisters will always be there to help you.

2013 Founders' Day Message

Dear Sisters,

April 17, 1893 is a significant day in Alpha Xi Delta’s history. This marks the day that ten young women marched into the chapel at Lombard College to introduce Alpha Xi Delta to the student body. On this day, Cora, Harriet, Lucy, Eliza, Frances, Almira, Bertha, Julia, Lewie and Alice proudly wore our beloved Quill badge, double blue ribbons (gold was not yet one of our colors) and long-stemmed pink roses for the first time. This moment in 1893, along with many other significant milestones, is part of the Fraternity’s history.

These moments combined with our bold and talented Sisters are what makes up the past, present and future of our organization. As we reflect on our history today and throughout the month of April and honor our ten Founders, I want you each to think about your place in Alpha Xi Delta and the history you are creating as a member in our Fraternity.

Since our 119^th Founders’ Day Celebration, there have been many new and exciting chapters written into Alpha Xi Delta’s history. Let’s take a look at some of the most recent memorable moments.

Last fall we recolonized and reinstalled our Beta Eta Chapter at the University of Maryland. I had the privilege of traveling to College Park, Maryland, for the Installation Ceremony in December, and was honored to share this historic experience with our colony members, Beta Eta alumnae and Alpha Xi Delta collegiate and alumnae Sisters. We are excited to continue the Beta Eta legacy at the University of Maryland and know that our colony women will continue to make the Fraternity and our Founders proud.

In January, we welcomed Sisters into our newest colony at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The colony will become the Fraternity’s 118^th link in our Sisterhood later this month when they are installed as the Iota Tau Chapter. These women have already grown tremendously throughout their time as colony members, and we look forward to watching them live our values and strengthen the bonds we share as Sisters.

In addition to adding these new links to our Sisterhood, in November of last year, we proudly announced Alpha Xi Deltas have raised more than $1,000,000 for our philanthropic partner, Autism Speaks. I have witnessed firsthand how our Sisters come together to support those who are affected by autism spectrum disorders, and I am truly inspired by the passion and dedication set forth by each of you. One million dollars raised was a significant milestone, and I know our collegians and alumnae alike will continue to do more great things for Autism Speaks in the many years to come.

These important milestones are now permanently written into Alpha Xi Delta’s history, and I am anxious to see what the next chapter in Alpha Xi Delta’s story will be during our 120^th year of Sisterhood.

As we look towards the upcoming year and reflect on our ten Founders, I want to encourage you to continue your Alpha Xi Delta story long after your collegiate years. One way to stay connected with Alpha Xi Delta, rekindle friendships and continue your story within our dear Fraternity is to join us in San Francisco, California, this summer as we celebrate Alpha Xi Delta’s 50^th National Convention. I know there are many great things planned for this event, and I hope to see you all there in June.

Thank you, Sisters, for being a part of Alpha Xi Delta’s history. I know, without a doubt, our Founders would be proud of the stories that make up Alpha Xi Delta’s history, and I look forward to continuing our story together throughout the coming years.

What if Frances Cheney had Succeeded in her Quest to Help Carl?

As we celebrate Founders' Day 2013, it is hard for us to imagine what that day was like 120 years ago when our ten Founders pinned on their double-blue bows and pink roses before making their way into the chapel. The nervous excitement for what was about to come is now reflected in each new member as she prepares for her own initiation. Our Founders had many decisions to make leading up to that day, and the days and years following, as they worked to build something that would grow and last well beyond their time at Lombard. That planning would later find itself represented at the beginning of our beloved Symphony, "a clear vision of life."

But, like chapters of today, there were decisions to be made about the direction of that new fraternity. Frances Cheney was known as the peacemaker of that first group, and in the young life of the chapter, she challenged her Sisters to use some of their newly established bank account to lend money for tuition to the boy who mowed the lawn at Lombard. However, Cora Bollinger Block had a different vision for that money. "Can't you see when Alpha Xi Delta will be in every first-rate college? How can we do that if we give money to Carl, who would probably hop a freight train to Heaven knows where?"

Don't worry, this isn't to say that Cora was without a "gracious and kindly heart," she just had a strong desire to "bring into living reality, a Sisterhood of women." And, as it turned out, she was right. Carl did hop on a train, but things turned out alright for Carl Sandburg too, his "real merit and worth" can be measured by his three Pulitzer Prizes.

That early "steadfastness of soul," the dream of a national Sisterhood, the dedication to "without bitterness or defeat, we may encounter misfortune and with humility meet success," is not only relevant to the building of a national Sisterhood and the 117 chapters of Alpha Xi Delta around the country, but each of our own individual Alpha Xi Delta experiences. The Sisterhood we share is based on the sharing of "joys and sorrow," just like it was for our Sisters Cora, Frances, Alice, Almira, Bertha, Eliza, Julia, Lucy, Harriet and Lewie. Their determination to build something greater than themselves is the definition of what we should be striving for in our Fraternity.

Our Founders gave to us this incredible gift of Sisterhood in Alpha Xi Delta, and we are now the stewards of this thing of immeasurable value. It is ours to add to, to strengthen, to grow and to share. This Founders' Day, I invite you to renew your committment to the ideals that these ten women "earnestly desire."

Have courage. Be gracious. Make peace.

Meet Alpha Xi Delta's Philanthropy Team!

Jennifer Umberger, Donna Worthley, Danielle Serlin, Jennifer Breisacher and Jennifer Beeman Zipf are all part of Alpha Xi Delta's Philanthropy Team. Together they work with Susan Mamber, Alpha Xi Delta's National Philanthropy Director, Kristen Ellefson, Alpha Xi Delta's Philanthropy and Community Outreach Manager, our collegiate chapters and alumnae associations to improve our philanthropic efforts and strengthten our partnership with Autism Speaks. In honor of Autism Awareness Month, we caught up with each of these amaXIng Sisters to learn more about their involvement with Alpha Xi Delta and Autism Speaks.

First up is Jennifer Umberger, Albion '98, Alpha Xi Delta's Territory Philanthropy Director for the Midwest.

Why do you volunteer for the Alpha Xi Delta Philanthropy Team?
I was approached by some of the amaXIng women on staff with Alpha Xi Delta following National Convention and was asked if I was interested in becoming a Territory Director for Philanthropy with responsibilities in the Midwest. Being from Michigan with strong ties in the Midwest (I've lived in Michigan, Indiana and Minnesota, and I have worked with Delta Alpha Chapter in Wisconsin), this was a great opportunity to connect with chapters I know, schools that I know and a cause that is near to my heart.

What is your favorite part of working with Alpha Xi Delta and Autism Speaks?
The endless opportunities to cultivate awareness and adovcacy for such an important cause. I LOVE the level of passion and creativity our collegiate members devote to philanthropy. If I can be a help to anyone, to take some worry away or direct someone to resources to meet a challenge, I consider that a success. The strength of the Alpha Xi Delta and Autism Speaks brands working together toward the same cause is exciting.

Tell us a little known fact about yourself.
I started playing viola in middle school and played the instrument throughout my senior year of college. My husband is always bugging me to start playing again!

Next is Donna Worthly, Indiana State '66, Alpha Xi Delta's Territory Philanthropy Director for the Southeast.

Have you been personally affected by autism spectrum disorders in any way?
My granddaughter recently celebrated her 12th birthday. Twelve years agao she was born a month premature and weighted a little over three pounds. Over the next year, she seemed to thrive, but by her age of 18 months, we knew something was wrong. With a diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum, her parents began an extensive therapy program. With the help of counselors, therapists, occupational therapists and lot of prayers, she began to make much progress. Finally, when she was four years old, she said her first words! What birthday celebrations we have had each year!

Why do you volunteer for the Alpha Xi Delta and the Philanthropy Team?
I only have to look at an amazing twelve year old to know why...

Tell us a little known fact about yourself.
I have been a University of Florida Master Gardener for 20 years.

Next is Dani Serlin, Cal State - Northridge '97, Alpha Xi Delta's Territory Philanthropy Director for the West.

Have you been personally affected by autism spectrum disorders in any way?
I have always been around children with autism. My mother is a Special Education teacher. I have learned how broad the spectrum is and the importance of early intervention. I have two cousins who are on the higher end of the autism spectrum, and they tend to have mild issues with social interactions. One of them has had early intervention through school and is now getting ready to graduate from California State University - Northridge. My other cousin is extremely bright, and his parents are not as open about how this effects him socially in preparation for middle school.

What is your favorite Walk Now For Autism Speaks memory?
My favorite memory is the 2012 Walk Now For Autism Speaks at the Rose Bowl here in California. There was a young child who was diagnosed with autism walking hand in hand with her mother. At one point, I felt a warm little hand in mine and realized the child had let go of her mother's hand to reach for mine. We walked hand in hand for a few moments and then she moved on.

Tell us a little known fact about yourself.
Even as an adult, my grandmother still buys me the Holiday Barbie for Hanukkah every year to add to my growing collection.

Next up is Jenn Breisacher, Monmouth University '07, Alpha Xi Delta's Territory Philanthropy Director for the Northeast.

Why do you choose to volunteer for the Alpha Xi Delta philanthropy team?
I love all things Alpha Xi Delta, and when I was asked to become a Territory Director, I did not even hesitate to say yes. Since then, I have learned so much about Autism Speaks, and I want to do whatever I can and encourage any who will listen to help with their mission. Both organizations are so open and welcoming. Some places you will find that people at the administrative level are intimidating. With Alpha Xi Delta and with Autism Speaks, everyone is down to earth and makes you feel part of whatever is happening.

What is your favorite part of working with Alpha Xi Delta and Autism Speaks?
I get to deal with so many people that have a passion for helping Autism Speaks. It is contagious. I am also fortunate enough to have conversations with both undergraduates and alumnae from not just the Northeast, but from across the country. I have developed some great friendships with people from both organizations that I never would have had the opportunity to make otherwise.

What is your favorite Alpha Xi Delta/Autism Speaks memory?
Being a facilitator at Alpha Xi Delta's Summer Immersion Experience this past summer was a completely life changing experience. The bond created with those of use who attended is something very special. Being able to work hands on with all four pillars of Autism Speaks was also an incredible experience, both personally and intellectually. I have a lot more respect for what it is they are trying to do, and as a result of the trip, I am even more passionate about helping their mission.

And last but not least, is Jennifer Zipf. Jennifer is Alpha Xi Delta's National Philanthropy Director of Alumnae Involvement.

Why do you choose to volunteer for the Alpha Xi Delta Philanthropy Team?
I choose to volunteer with the Philanthropy Team because it combines two of my favorite things - Alpha Xi Delta and Autism Speaks! It has been a fun challenge to work with the alumnae and help develop our partnership. I am so incredibly proud of how Sisters across all parts of the country, all walks of life, are connecting to our mission and working together to help find the missing piece of the puzzle.

Have you been personally affected by autism spectrum disorders in any way?
I am personally affected by autism spectrum disorders (ASD) every day in my job as an elementary educator. There is always at least one student in my class, often more, that is on the spectrum. I work every day to help the student(s) in my class learn to navigate ASD as well as help the class to accept and celebrate students that are different than they are.

What is your favorite part of working with Alpha Xi Delta and Autism Speaks?
My favorite part of working with Alpha Xi Delta and Autism Speaks is the amaXIng connections I have made with Sisters everywhere as well as meeting tons of new people through Autism Speaks. Every time I am at an Autism Speaks meeting or representing Alpha Xi Delta in the community, I cannot help but beam with pride, knowing that the work we do every day is helping change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders.

Inspiration from our Founders

Last month, women all over the world took time to observe Women’s History Month by reflecting on the challenges that many women faced in the past. Throughout the month of March, we were reminded of the women who have helped us, as modern women, get to where we are today. With such an important month coming to a close, it feels appropriate that we celebrate Cora, Alice, Almira, Frances, Bertha, Eliza, Julia, Lucy, Harriet and Lewie as trailblazers for the future generations of Alpha Xi Delta.

These women came together to support one another in a time when there were few women attending college and those that did faced many uphill battles. They did not have the modern conveniences and privileges we have today. Yet, they found the time to come together, organize our Fraternity, write our rituals and create an organization that is still strong 120 years later.

“Our Founders certainly believed all things possible 120 years ago when they founded Alpha Xi Delta, and what an incredible legacy they created for all of us. Each year, when I attend a Founders’ Day celebration and hear about our Founders, I am truly moved by their fortitude and shared vision to bring into living reality our current, thriving Sisterhood,” said Alpha Xi Delta’s National President, Sandi Edwards.

“The cherished Founders of Alpha Xi Delta serve as my inspiration to give back to our dear Fraternity. Although we can’t step back in time and be in the room with our Founders as they created the vision that is Alpha Xi Delta, we can help create our organization’s solid future. Each of us has the responsibility of giving back to Alpha Xi Delta through volunteering, participating in Autism Speaks efforts and contributing to the Foundation. Doing so ensures future generations of women have the opportunity to become part of this amazing Sisterhood I have so endearingly embraced for the past four decades.”
