Indianapolis, IN - Alpha Xi Delta is excited to announce that an agreement has been reached with the men of Phi Sigma Kappa to lease their property at 1004 S. Second Street in Champaign. Alpha Xi Delta will lease only the first floor for the 2008-2009 academic year, and members will have the opportunity to move into the house in the fall of 2009.
During the 2008-2009 school year, the colony will be able to use the house for chapter meetings, Sisterhood events, and as a general gathering place. The house will see its first use on September 28, as Alpha Xi Delta welcomes her first class of Founding Sisters with a formal pledging ceremony and Bid Day celebration.
"Alpha Xi Delta is extremely grateful to the men of Phi Sigma Kappa for making their home available for our members' use, and we will do our best to be good stewards of the property until such time as Phi Sigma Kappa returns to campus," said Deanna Detchemendy, Alpha Xi Delta's National President. While Alpha Xi Delta is in residence at Phi Sigma Kappa, the Alpha Xi Delta National Housing Corporation will continue working to identify and secure a permanent home for the sorority's University of Illinois chapter.
Both Alpha Xi Delta and Phi Sigma Kappa will work diligently over the next two weeks to ensure the house is in prime condition to welcome new Alpha Xi Delta members. Landscapers and interior decorators have been selected, and a new set of Alpha Xi Delta letters have been ordered. A banner that says, "Future Home of Alpha Xi Delta" will be hung early next week and will remain until the letters arrive.
Alpha Xi Delta is currently recruiting women who will re-establish the sorority at the University of Illinois. Originally established in 1905 as the sixth sorority on campus, Alpha Xi Delta closed its doors in 1995 due to declining membership. The organization has held several successful recruitment events so far this fall aimed at attracting bright, dynamic young women at the University to ensure Alpha Xi Delta's return to the Panhellenic community as a vibrant new option for women seeking the Greek experience. New members of Alpha Xi Delta will be selected on September 28.
Founded in 1893 at Lombard College, now Knox College, in Galesburg, Illinois, Alpha Xi Delta inspires women to realize their potential by providing opportunities for sisterhood, leadership, knowledge and service. The national women's fraternity has over 144,000 initiated members and has chapters on 112 college campuses.
