Alpha Xi Delta is teaming up with national fraternities and sororities to show our support for the Collegiate Housing Infrastructure Act (CHIA). If passed, this piece of legislation will allow tax-deductible contributions to be made to National Housing Corporations and Foundations to improve the infrastructure and safety attributes in non-for-profit student housing.

Currently, one out of every eight college students lives in Greek Housing. This means fraternity and sororities provide housing for more than 250,000 college students a year. But since many Greek houses are old, only half of them have sprinkler systems installed. CHIA will help fraternities and sororities make these small, yet important, safety and structural improvements to chapter houses. In addition to sprinklers, some other improvements include the installation of alarm systems and smoke detectors. These tax-deductible contributions will ensure that Greek Housing remains a safe and affordable option for college living.

On April 23, Alpha Xi Delta’s National Government Relations Chair, Sheri O’Connell, Maryland ’78, and and Mazi Kuba, West Chester ’09, will be in Washington D.C. with NPC Chair, Jane Sutton, Western Carolina ’75, other Alpha Xi Delta Sisters and fraternity and sorority representatives lobbying for CHIA. If you will not be present for the events, it’s not too late to get involved and show your support. All you have to do is visit the Fraternal Caucus’ Facebook application to send a letter to your Congressman or sign a petition in support of pro-Greek legislation.
